Where did the KMT set up their government after leaving mainland China?

The Kuomintang (KMT), or the Nationalist Party of China, set up its government in Taiwan after being defeated by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in the Chinese Civil War (1927-1949). The KMT maintained its claim to govern all of China from Taiwan, resisting the Communist regime in Beijing. This led to decades of tension between Taiwan and mainland China, a situation that has continued to evolve.
