Before 1935, Iran was officially known as “Persia” in the Western world. In that year, Reza Shah Pahlavi urged that countries with diplomatic connections with Persia begin referring to the country by its native name, “Iran.” This name change was intended to represent the country’s pre-Islamic origin and identity as the land of the Aryans (the word “Iran” derives from “Aryan”).
