What are gyres in the context of ocean currents?

Gyres refer to large circular currents formed by water accumulations and the flow around them. These gyres are vast systems of rotating ocean currents that cover whole ocean basins and play an important role in global ocean circulation. Gyres are most commonly found in subtropical oceanic locations furthest from the equator. The Earth has five primary gyres: the North Atlantic, South Atlantic, North Pacific, South Pacific, and Indian Ocean gyres.
