What is El Nino?

El Nino is a climate phenomenon that causes periodic warming of sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. El Nino has widespread effects on weather and climate around the world. It can lead to increased rainfall and flooding in some regions, droughts and reduced rainfall in others, changes in storm tracks, and alterations in temperature patterns. These impacts can vary depending on the strength and duration of the El Nino event.
