What is a volcano?

A volcano is a rupture in the Earth’s crust that allows hot lava, volcanic ash, and gases to escape from a magma chamber below the surface.

Volcanoes are frequently located along tectonic plate borders, especially when plates are diverging or converging. They can also occur in “hot spots,” portions of the Earth’s mantle that are unusually hot.
