The layer of Earth’s atmosphere that contains the ozone layer is the stratosphere. The ozone layer is found in the lower stratosphere, between 15 and 40 kilometers above the Earth’s surface. This region is known as the ozone layer because it contains a high concentration of ozone (O3) molecules, which absorb much of the Sun’s ultraviolet (UV) energy.
