What is the origin of the word “acid”?

The word “acid” is derived from the Latin word “acidus,” which means ‘sour,’ reflecting the sour taste of many acids.

These days, an acid is defined as a chemical that increases the concentration of hydronium ions (H3O+) in a solution when dissolved in water. They usually taste sour, turn blue litmus paper red, and undergo a chemical reaction known as neutralisation with bases to produce salts and water.
