Pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis, can be caused by viruses, bacteria, or allergens. Viral pink eye is the most common form and is highly contagious. Bacterial pink eye is also contagious and requires antibiotic treatment. Allergic conjunctivitis is caused by allergens such as pollen, pet dander, or dust mites.
