What organism holds the record for having the highest chromosome number?

The highest chromosome number recorded to date is estimated to be found in the adder’s tongue fern Ophioglossum reticulatum.  This fern species has more than 1400 chromosomes in each somatic cell.  While Paris japonica also has a high chromosome count, the adder’s tongue fern holds the current record for the highest number among known organisms.
