Which was the first living passenger sent into orbit, and by which satellite?

Sputnik 2 was launched by the Soviet Union on 3 November 1957, carrying Laika, the first living passenger into orbit. Unfortunately, Laika did not survive the mission. The spacecraft was not designed for a safe return, and Laika died a few hours after launch due to overheating caused by a malfunction in the temperature control system.
