Sputnik 1 was the first artificial satellite launched into space by the Soviet Union on October 4, 1957. It was a metal sphere with four long antennae extending outward, which were used to transmit radio signals back to Earth. Today, October 4th is celebrated as the start of World Space Week, in recognition of Sputnik 1’s historic launch.
