Horses are not ruminants. Ruminants are herbivorous mammals having a unique stomach that contains many compartments for fermenting plant-based foods. They include cattle, sheep, and deer. Horses, on the other hand, have a single-chambered stomach and are considered non-ruminant herbivores known as “hindgut fermenters.” Horses ferment food in their hindgut, rather than in a specialized stomach. Therefore, horses do not exhibit the characteristics of ruminant animals.
